RedMagic 9S Pro Review: The most powerful Gaming phone in 2024

The RedMagic 9S Pro is the new line-up of Nubia’s RedMagic series which is focused for the gaming lovers. This mouse is designed to combine powerful features of modern technologies with a range of characteristics that will suit a wide variety of users, starting from ordinary users and finished with hardcore gamers. In this article, I talk about the exact specifications of the RedMagic 9S Pro, the uniqueness of its features, as well as my impression of the said device.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Design and Build Quality

With its striking design, the RedMagic 9S Pro showcases its gaming heritage. It features a sleek and angular chassis with an RGB light strip on the back that incorporates a sense of futurism. Measurements are 168.6 x 77.6 x 9.8 mm with a weight of 220 grams, slightly heavier than regular smartphones but quite apt for a gaming device. Regarding the build quality, it is premium, with a mix of metal and glass that makes the device feel quite strong and lasting.

On the top edge of the RedMagic 9S Pro, you find a 3.5mm headphone jack-mandatory for any hard-gaming phone. The bottom edge hosts a USB-C port, although missing is the secondary charging port on the longer side, something that earlier ROG models did have but is absent in the ROG Phone 8.

The front display of the RedMagic 9S Pro is exceptional, with almost no bezels and no notch, bumping the screen-to-body ratio up to an impressive 93.7%. It can't be an extreme gaming phone, of course-front-firing speakers and tacti surface areas for gripping are a positive; still, the looks are sure striking and build toward enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the phone.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Display

The front of the RedMagic 9S Pro hosts a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with 1440 x 3200 pixels. This gives it roughly 510 PPI, hence clear and sharp displays. Refresh rate on this display goes up to 165Hz for very smooth scrolling and gameplay. The peak brightness is 800 nits, hence easily readable under bright sunlight. The screen further supports HDR10 for improved color accuracy and greater contrast to make your content more immersive. The RedMagic 9S Pro does sport a refresh rate of 120Hz, which is quite adequate and stands shoulder to shoulder with the best gaming phones out there, much like the Asus ROG Phone 8. On the other hand, it does not support going beyond the refresh rate.

This is not much of a drawback in practice, as few games use a refresh rate above 120Hz. For the few situations that would require such, one would probably find a medium to play the game on other than a smartphone. The display resolution on RedMagic 9S Pro is awesome, and dedicated gaming mode makes sure the phone is giving all it can to the screen. The minimal bezel design sets up a pretty immersive view. However, touching the screen for controlling games, as in most smartphones, remains quite an Achilles' heel. Thankfully, these capacitive shoulder triggers saved the day, and a bit more responsive gameplay was better.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Performance

Under the hood, the RedMagic 9S Pro uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, while 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of internal storage are provided by UFS 4.0. This top-of-the-line hardware should guarantee performance at the highest level, be it a multitasking scenario, hard gaming, or working with resource-intensive applications. Meanwhile, an internal fan and vapor chamber make up the advanced cooling system to keep peak performance up longer in extended sessions of gaming.

Moving on to the Geekbench 6 CPU test, the RedMagic 9S Pro got down to business with an average single-core score of 2,288 and a multi-core score of 7,076. These numbers are impressively high across all smartphones, which was to be expected since this device is tailored for gaming.

Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of the RedMagic 9S Pro would be its storage count: while 256GB and 512GB are reasonable capacities for a lot of smartphones, it doesn't come even close to meeting a high-demanding gaming-centric smartphone like this. It is uncertain what's holding RedMagic back, but the most notable gaming competitor from Asus sees the ROG Phone 8 Pro go up to 1TB in storage.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Camera System

The camera arrangement on the RedMagic 9S Pro is an all-inclusive one: a 64 MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture for high-resolution images with respectable low-light performance, an 8 MP ultra-wide lens with a 120-degree field of view for wide landscapes and group photos, a 2 MP macro lens for close-up shots, and there is also a 2 MP depth sensor to improve portrait photography with enhanced background separation.

On the front, it is set with a 32 MP selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.0 for sharp and clear self-portraits. It will also support 8K video recording and several shooting modes to boost the level of your photography experience further.

The back cameras on the RedMagic 9S Pro are capable of capturing video up to 8K at 30 frames per second. While the detail is impressive, footage is far too frequently oversaturated. Camera movement can also induce a jell-o-like wobble in videos. Colour accuracy is significantly better at 4K60, though footage still seems a tad oversaturated. Front camera video, meanwhile, appears hazy and with muddied colours, and is best avoided.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Battery Life

RedMagic 9S Pro packing a capacity of a 5,000 mAh battery that is compatible with 120W fast-wired charging. This makes it possible to get a rapid recharging, where by the phone can be charged from 0 to 100 percent in about 20 minutes. It also comes with wireless charging capability that supports 65W and also has10W reverse wireless charging capability.

The RedMagic 9S Pro takes a while to drain, and when that time comes, the 80W charger in the phone package will quickly charge the phone. The moment the battery was drained to around 70 %; I took thirty minutes to recharge it to that level while it took me 45 minutes plus to have it fully charged. This quick charging capacity is very useful especially to gamers who require charging their device with the shortest time possible. However, it is necessary to notice the absence of wireless charging in the given phone; nevertheless, this can be considered as a disadvantage for those who have expected to find this option in a contemporary smartphone.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Software & Gaming

The RedMagic 9S Pro comes with RedMagic OS 9 which is built on Android 14. This has specifically designed for gaming and contains Game Space to control games setting and keep tracking of the device performance and configuring controls. It has also incorporated other features to boost the performance in games as well as functionality of the software.

But being a gaming phone, it has a lot of customizations available in the RedMagic 9S Pro. The Game Lobby is undocked by sliding the red textured switch that is located at the top of the device. This instantly adds the game installed on your app but you are also able to add apps individually if necessary. The Game Lobby also acts as one-stop center for your gaming screenshots as well as videos. Clicking the icon, with label Energy Cube, reveals the settings for touch sample, performance, GPU, and some other options.

RedMagic 9S Pro: Additional Features

5G Connectivity: It supports the latest 5G networks to let you enjoy faster internet and a stronger connection.

Dual-SIM Support: It allows you to use up to two SIM cards simultaneously.

Is RedMagic 9S Pro Worth Buying in 2024 ?

What is more, the RedMagic 9S Pro can be named a true gaming smartphone with the rather impressive specifications and features. The chipset is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3; the screen has a high refresh rate, the cooling mechanism is innovative, all factors making it a dream device for gaming. More to it, the design of the device, the features it comes with and the ability to support fast charging also plays a major role. For both occasional users and gamers, RedMagic 9S Pro provides an interesting experience at a relatively high level of performance and most important utility.

If one is looking at specifically getting a gaming smartphone that has all the bells and the whistles of a high-end gaming device as well as the looks to go with it then the RedMagic 9S Pro is definitely a phone that should be considered.
