Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch (UM3406) Review: A Look Into a Budget Laptop Star

With a premium design and extremely modern technology, the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch UM3406P is currently one of the most interesting ultrabooks on the market. This is the kind of laptop aimed at highly demanding users for whom maximum performance, brilliant displays, and mobility will be paramount. It's hence ideal for pros, creatives, and tech enthusiasts. Now, let's go deep into the detailed review of its specifications and key features.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Design and Build Quality

The Zenbook 14 OLED Touch is also made to be tough, with an elegant and sturdy aluminum chassis. The casing feels reassuringly solid, yet light enough  and strong for portable usage, at a slim 16.9mm thick. Designed with the signature Asus concentric circle finish on the lid, this imparts an air of sophistication into the design ethic. Other neat design touches include the ErgoLift hinge, which lifts the keyboard a bit when you open up the laptop to make typing a little more comfortable and improve airflow.

One major gripe I have with the design of the Zenbook 14 (UM3406HA) is that the metal chassis is just really easily smudged up by fingerprint marks. I was able to clean my hands with soap before touching the laptop, and yet my fingers still managed to leave prints on just about everywhere. Having used it for two weeks, this laptop was so smudged up, especially around the keyboard and on the lid, it really looked quite unsightly. These marks can be wiped off with a damp cloth, but I found that I wanted to clean it rather often, and that's a bit of a chore if wanting to keep it pristine.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Display

It is one of the key highlights of this Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: a 14-inch Full HD+ OLED fitted with 2880 x 1800 pixels. The screen will boast more productivity room vertically with a 16:10 aspect ratio. It will also sport a 90Hz refresh rate that will render smooth visuals, whether you are going through documents or playing back videos in HD definition. The screen features deep blacks, vivid colors, and an excellent contrast ratio with the OLED technology while the panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Additionally, it is Pantone-validated, making the screen a very good option for color-sensitive work such as photo and video editing.

This OLED display features a 60Hz refresh rate and an impressively low response time of 0.2ms, so as to provide noticeably smooth and fast visuals directly from the system. While it's not fit for gaming, this is excellent performance for everyday tasks like video streaming or running creative software. It also emits 70% less blue light than standard LCDs, making it much easier on the eyes of those sensitive to prolonged exposure to a screen.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Performance

Under the hood, the Zenbook 14 OLED Touch fits in AMD's Ryzen 7000 series processors, from Ryzen 5 to Ryzen 9, depending on your performance needs. The laptop then pairs that with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM for frictionless multitasking, making it befitting for most demanding applications and workflows. Storage options abound up to 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD for storage, which means one gets the system booting at high speed and opens all their files in no time. The integrated AMD Radeon graphics provided good performance with light gaming and other graphical works, though it's not a gaming laptop.

To check CPU-based rendering performance, I ran Cinebench R23 on these laptops. The performance was good; however, the results were rather unexpected. Whereas the Intel machine posted a score of just 11,300 points, the AMD machine actually had higher at 13,484. However, in the Crossmark test-which gauges general system performance-the Intel machine did manage to edge its AMD counterpart. This would then indicate that while AMD had the stronger CPU, the surrounding parts in Intel had better synergy to allow the overall performance to be higher.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Keyboard and Touchpad

The touch typing on the Zenbook 14 OLED Touch is relatively comfortable with decent key travel and tactile feedback. The touchpad is pretty spacious for effortless navigation and is supported with multi-touch gestures. Adding this, it also comes with NumberPad 2.0-enabled touchpad that can be toggled on/off by just a touch of your finger-a great convenience if you're always dealing in numbers.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Connectivity and Ports

Despite the slender profile, the Zenbook 14 OLED Touch doesn't settle less when it comes to connectivity. It's fitted with two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with DisplayPort and Power Delivery support, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, an HDMI 2.0b port, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm audio jack. You will really appreciate such a versatile port selection to make sure you can attach a bunch of peripherals without extra dongles getting in the way.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Battery Life

Another big positive is the battery life for the Zenbook 14 OLED Touch. A 75Wh battery sits inside this laptop, which Asus claims can last up to 15 hours on one charge, depending on how you use it. Performance in the real world tends to easily get through a full workday with moderate usage. The device comes equipped with fast charging. It is able to charge up to 60% in just 49 minutes, thereby making it convenient for users who are always on the go.

After using it daily for about three weeks with the Zenbook 14 (UM3406HA), I ran a Microsoft battery report. According to the latter, its average battery life was 15 hours and 14 minutes, which is pretty decent. Of course, screen brightness and the type of program used can significantly influence battery consumption, thus giving it a far shorter or longer life. Still, this laptop will suit those who need to be able to stay unplugged for a long time. When I was working from home, I appreciated not needing to charge it every day-the battery ran for two to three days between charges.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Audio

The audio in the Zenbook 14 OLED Touch is supported by a Harman Kardon-certified audio system, featuring clear and powerful sounds. The downward-firing speakers are not the best solution to please an audiophile, but they work well for casual listening-an example of this would be watching videos or making a video call.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch: Additional Features

🔸Windows Hello: The fingerprint reader is housed in the power button for secure and convenient logins via Windows Hello.

🔸Webcam: Meanwhile, the webcam, coming in at 720p HD, also features a physical privacy shutter to enable security when the camera isn't active. It features AI noise-canceling technology that helps bring great clarity to audio during video calls.

🔸Military-Grade Durability: The Zenbook 14 OLED Touch delivers with the MIL-STD-810H military standard for matters of drop and extreme temperatures, among other factors of durability.

The new MyASUS is a great improvement from its predecessor in layout, which makes it so easy to use and find my tools in no time. This application is very useful; it can be used for monitoring system performance, running diagnostics, checking updates, or managing different ASUS devices. The Customer Support tab delivers the best support and information on my particular laptop model. So far, everything is at my fingertips with MyASUS, and performance settings can be tuned in many ways, and switching between modes was as easy as pie.

Is The Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch Worth Buying ?

The Asus Zenbook 14 OLED Touch UM3406 is an ultrabook that does most things right, providing a pretty enticing combination of performance, portability, and premium features. Above all else, it has an OLED display-a panel type that simply feels like the main selling point, thanks to visuals stunning enough for both work and entertainment alike. It adds a sleek design to strong performance and long battery life, which makes the laptop fit for professionals and creatives alike. Really, as long as one does not want to use the device for heavy gaming, it outshines nearly every other area and makes it among the best ultrabooks.
